It began with a letter from the Pittsburgh area - "We are converting a defunct nursing home and have 90 hand-crank hospital beds available." Want them? Of course we want them! After an inspection by Dr. Hepworth, we agreed that MCH would take 60 beds. Now the task was to get them from Pittsburgh to Grand Rapids, MI, and put them in storage for up to two years until the new hospital building is ready.
Does Women's Mite have storage available for 60 beds? "No" came the answer. Is there a barn or an empty warehouse where these could be stored? "None that we know about". Finally, word came that a warehouse in Michigan might be able to take them. They asked, "Any idea about cubic volume needed for storage?" The beds were going to be broken down into component parts (4 pieces to each bed) for transport so we did a quick computation. "Okay, we could store them for you."
Andy Bendzin and I picked up a 26 foot U-Haul truck in Pittsburgh and were met at the nursing home by a crew of 8 men from a local church. After over two hours, we had loaded 60 beds - except there was no room for the last 9 mattresses. The truck was jammed full wall to wall and floor to ceiling. Andy drove off to Michigan while I sat in the parking lot making some phone calls and emails. One email was to the warehouse and Women's Mite telling them the truck was on its way. It wasn't 5 minutes later that my warehouse contact called and said, "Sixty beds! I thought we were talking about only 2 beds! We can't possible take that many beds and store them for two years!"
And the answer remained "No, we cannot take them". What was I to do? Andy was already 30 minutes down the road with a truck full of beds. Thank God for fellow believers whom God puts in just the right place at the right time! Jay and Sharon Johnson (Women's Mite) and Steve and Jan Tower were there for me and had the right words and ideas given to them by the Spirit of God. Fellow missionary, Dr. Bob Cropsey called back - "Hey! I've got one church with an empty garage you could use for 6 months but it is over an hour away from Grand Rapids." Well, at least the Lord had provided a potential place and I was feeling much better. Finally Jay called back with a warehouse just 10 miles away. Praise the Lord! Jay had one other item that shot me over the top! Pastor Brian Cedarquist and a team of men from Good News Baptist Church (home of Women's Mite) would meet Andy at the warehouse and unload the truck. Praise to our Sovereign Lord! Jehovah Jireh - My Provider!
